During the summer of 2000, AEL&P crews began burying a mile and a half section of power line that stretches along the top of Sheep Mountain, near the Annex Creek Powerhouse.

Suspended above ground since it was laid some 85 years ago, officials decided that is was more practical for safety and reliability reasons to get the upper section about two feet under the normally snow-covered region.

Crews were able to bury about half of the upper section before September snowfalls forced workers to wrap things up for the
Annex Creek powerline
season.  However, they are hopeful that the upper power line will be completely covered by the end of *October 2001.

Other work going on in the area included the addition of a new transformer for the Annex Creek Powerhouse.  The new air-cooled unit replaces the 85-year-old water-cooled transformer which was part of the original facility.

The Annex Creek Powerhouse provides Juneau with up to 15 percent of it's electrical power.
