Over the years, AEL&P has developed a reputation for being a technological leader in the electric utility industry. In its quest to be the best electric utility possible for Juneau, it has pioneered imaginative rate structures and continually installed technologically advanced equipment. In fact, other utilities have even sought AEL&P out and asked it to put on seminars about its advanced rate structures.

AEL&P's past technological innovations, like hot water metering in the 1920's, have given way to their modern equivalents. For example, now in exchange for preferential rates, radio-controls are installed on willing customers' electric water heaters. These controls respond to AEL&P computer-generated radio signals that can turn the heaters off when necessary during critical times like outage recovery and periods that require the use of diesel fueled generation.

This search for constant improvement and superior customer service has brought Alaska Electric Light and Power recognition from many quarters.

One of the highlights of this recognition occurred in February of 1993 with the selection of AEL&P as the runner-up in the prestigious Blue Chip Enterprise Initiative Awards competition.

The Blue Chip Enterprise Initiative Awards are sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Nation's Business magazine and Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company. The annual competition is designed to seek out, learn from and recognize exemplary small businesses across America.

AEL&P was among a select group of businesses honored for their demonstrated ability to meet competitive challenges, weather the cyclical nature of business, creatively realize opportunities, and overcome adversity.
