The Snettisham Project is now the primary supplier of electrical power to AEL&P and its customers in the City and Borough of Juneau, but there are no electrical interconnections in Southeast Alaska for AEL&P to draw upon in the event of a Snettisham outage. As a result, AEL&P is in the unusual position of having to tie up an extraordinary amount of its capital in costly backup equipment and backup equipment servicing; equipment whose sole purpose is to stand unused most of the time, but is ready to go at a moment's notice. Expensive? Of course, but it's comforting to know that AEL&P is fully prepared and its consumers won't have to freeze in the dark. The alternative is unthinkable!
