Towers on the Snettisham line are identified by
two numbers.
The first number describes which mile of
... the Snettisham transmission line tripped off line.
Crews flew by helicopter to search for the
problem.
That afternoon crews returned to the site. They discovered that additional avalanches had come down since first flight that morning, and that one had completely destroyed tower 3/5. When the second avalanche hit it, it pulled so hard on the wire connecting it to the neighboring structure that tower 3/4, a guyed tangent tower, was pulled to the ground and destroyed. In all, at least three avalanches damaged and destroyed towers over a 1-1/2 mile stretch of the Snettisham line.
With the damaged section so close to Snettisham,
it was clear that the project would be the major center for mobilizing
equipment and staging materials.
The avalanche also destroyed the
communications link to Snettisham.
The afternoon of the avalanche, AEL&P
employees went to Snettisham to establish e-mail and internet
communications.
There was still five feet of snow at Snettisham.
Snow removal began for the staging area for
equipment and materials. Permits for
deploying explosives from a helicopter for avalanche control were
obtained from the appropriate agencies. By Sunday,
April 18, avalanche control work had begun at the avalanche site to
make the area safe for crews that would work in the area. Repair Progress |
