Week 3, 5/3/08 – 5/9/08

Activities

  • The site is safe enough for crews to access some portions.

  • The conductor (wire between towers) was tied off at tower 5/1, the first intact tower on the town side of the avalanche.  This allows a balanced load on the tower.

  • Conductor was also tied off at tower 3/3, the first intact tower on the Snettisham side of the line.

  • Avalanche control work continues.  Natural avalanches continue to come down.

  • Conductor was removed from all towers in the work area.

  • It is finally safe enough to access tower 3/5 site.  Still 10 to 20 feet of snow and ice here.  Surveyors marked calculated locations for the three tower foundations and 12 guy anchors which are still buried.  Crews will attempt to find foundations and anchors by setting burn barrels full of charcoal over the expected spot and letting them melt down through the snow to the ground.
