M/V Stanelco laying submarine cable (12291 bytes) Four new submarine cables laid during the summer of 1999 are ensuring that AEL&P customers stay well-lit, toasty warm and, in general, well energized through this frigid winter, and many seasons beyond.

The $11 million -- three years in the making -- project culminated in June 1999 when the Motor Vessel Stanelco completed laying the cables across a four-mile stretch of Taku Inlet, connecting the east and west terminals of the Snettisham Hydroelectric Project, 28 miles southeast of Juneau.

Awarded in the fall of ’98 to the Norwegian-based Alcatel Kabel Norge company, the project involved laying some 16 miles of cable and now gives AEL&P customers a total of eight underwater cables from Snettisham which percolates about 80 percent of the area’s electricity.

The oil-filled, pressurized cables now augment the original four cables that were laid in 1974, and feature state-of-the-art reliability needed to survive the rugged terrain and cold water of Taku Inlet, helping keep Juneau in the juice for decades to come.
