A new history began July 1, 2014, when AEL&P -- as part of Alaska Energy and Resources Company -- was acquired by Avista Corp., of Spokane, Wash.

At that moment, the oldest regulated electric utility in Alaska joined with an established and major company involved in the production, transmission and distribution of energy for eastern Washington, northern Idaho and parts of southern and eastern Oregon.

As we look forward to an exciting future with  Avista, we do not forget our century of service that began earnestly enough in 1893 with a simple water wheel. Below you'll find some of the major events that took place in our more than 100 years of service.

125th Anniversary Celebration

2018 was a year of reflection and celebration for AEL&P with our 125-year anniversary and celebrating our meaningful role in our community.

We had a great time celebrating several actives and events throughout the year with the community!

Open House and Cookie Extravaganza

December 2017 & 2018 • We started off and ended our year long celebration with an Open House and Cookie Extravaganza! Employees made plate after plate of homemade cookies and we opened our doors to the community with tours, warm cocoa, cider, cookie decorating and prizes for the kids.

Alaska lifestyle and home show

April 2018 • During this annual public event we debuted our 125th anniversary timeline of our history serving Juneau.

Juneau / Douglas 4th of July ParadeS

July 2018 • As part of our celebration, employees and their families donated their time and resources to help create an amazing float for the Juneau and Douglas 4th of July parade celebrations, and we couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out. Everyone who participated had a great time and we were thrilled to share the float and our excitement with the community!

APK Display

September 2018 • We were honored to be on display in the Mezzanine at the Alaska State Museum where we displayed unique historical artifacts related to our 125-year history, along with an extensive timeline detailing our long and innovative history serving Juneau since 1893.

Historical Photo GalleRy Show

October 2018 • In 1936, AEL&P completed the construction of its new showroom and operations headquarters at 134 N. Franklin St. Today this beautifully renovated location is the home of the Amalga Distillery and we were thrilled to have them host us in their Artists Gallery. We displayed and made available to the public historical photo archives of some rarely seen images from AEL&P’s fascinating history.

Snippets

November 2018 • Perseverance Theatre hosted us as we took a retrospective look at some notable bits from AEL&P’s history in a fun, family-friendly event which was free to the community.
